People use the site to fund their projects ("project creators") and keep 100% ownership and control.
Visitors to the site can ‘discover’ the projects and find a posted project that they would like to ‘pledge’ money to help the project creators to achieve their monetary goal and complete the project. Pledgers don’t have to pay unless the project meets the funding goal. If you want to see a project come to life, you are more motivated to pledge and/or spread the word about the project.
One of the reasons why I like the site is because it is totally free. Project creators receive 100% of the funds they raise.
Some projects include someone sending a handmade postcard every day for one year chronicling her move cross-country, a cookbook for Midwestern cuisine (as a native Midwesterner, this sparks my interest but considering Midwestern food is laden with butter and fat, maybe the world would be better off in the dark), producing a play, and sending a poor college student to a top art school in Sydney.
Ability to start projects on the site is invite-only so the projects on the site seem to be of higher quality and lend a more legitimate tone to the site.
This hand made guitar picks project is phenomenal. If I weren’t a poor advertising graduate student, its the one I would pledge.
